WORKSHOP ON OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OER) FOR SENIOR MANAGEMENT OF AAOU MEMBER INSTITUTIONS

1 October 2011 Penang, Malaysia

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO in partnership with the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) and Wawasan Open University are hosting a workshop for Senior Management of AAOU member institutions on the use of Open Educational Resources in Higher Education. This day long workshop, designed as a post-conference activity of the 25th AAOU Annual Conference (28-30 September 2011), will be held on Saturday 1st October 2011, at the Wawasan Open University Main Campus in Penang, Malaysia.

Information on the workshop is available at http://oerworkshop.weebly.com/penang-workshop.html while detailed information on the 25th AAOU Annual Conference is available at http://www.aaou.net/aaou2011/ .

The OER workshop is part of a COL-UNESCO joint initiative: ‘Taking OER beyond the OER Community: Policy and Capacity’ that aims to expand understanding of OER by educational decision makers and quality assurance experts so as to promote their wider use (http://oerworkshop.weebly.com).

The theme of the day long workshop is: ‘OER and Impact: Ensuring that Open Content Builds Educational Quality in Higher Education in Asia'.

The objectives of the workshop are to:
  • introduce the concept of Open Educational Resources (OER) and the open licensing frameworks that make sharing of educational content possible;
  • present the COL/UNESCO Guidelines on OER in Higher Education and get feedback on draft version from stakeholders;
  • explore how open licensing can help to improve the quality of education in Asia; and
  • discuss where and how policies and practices in education need to change in order to harness the potential of OER.
Sir John Daniel, President and CEO of the Commonwealth of Learning will deliver the keynote address and the workshop will be facilitated by key players in the global OER movement

Participation in the workshop is free but registration is compulsory.  Please register for the workshop online by 15th August 2011 via:

Participation is restricted to only 30 participants and acceptance will be on a first come first served basis.

For more information on the workshop please contact Ms Trudi van Wyk, Education Specialist: eLearning, COL at tvanwyk@col.org.

For logistical information please contact Dr Andy Liew at andyliew@wou.edu.my

Note: If you are traveling onwards to the ICDE Conference in Bali, Indonesia, flights are available from Penang to Denpasar, Bali on 2 October 2011.

As you may be aware, the AAOU General Board at its Hanoi meeting last year adopted a proposal to promote the use of OER among its members. This workshop is a follow-up activity in support of that decision. I look forward to seeing you at this important workshop. It will help you develop greater understanding on this new and exciting initiative for the sharing of courseware content. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Prof Wong Tat Meng,

President, AAOU
